Welcome back Varitek

It's over! It's finally over!

Jason Varitek agrees to a one-year deal with an option for 2010.

Just love these long and dragged out contract deals.

Now we can finally do some team breakdowns...

Pitching rotation
Batting lineup
Bullpen
Bench

Check out these topic discussions this weekend.

About Batter-up with Bruno

Batter-up with Bruno is a blog written by Amanda Bruno that originated on AOL Journals back in January of 2005.

In February of 2007 it was moved over to Google's Blogger to have a more professional look. It was also good timing because AOL Journals was eventually discontinued.

This blog covers the Boston Red Sox from the perspective of a diehard fan and female sportswriter. Batter-up with Bruno is filled with weekly and game recaps, team and player analysis, just for fun posts, and the occasional op-ed. It also follows coverage of the changing Boston sports media industry and college newspapers.

Batter-up with Bruno has been linked and featured on Boston Sports Media WatchSOX & Dawgs, Sox Addict, Fang's Bites(multiple times), Big League Screw, Yankee Addicts, Red Sox Monster and masslive.com (The Springfield Republican's website) saluting sports columnist Garry Brown on his retirement.

Jagodzinski hired as Bucs' offensive coordinator

Saw this in today's Republican because we got the paper for free today at our door.

Ex-Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski was hired on Thursday to become the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jagodzinski was fired by BC on January 7 for going behind the Athletic Director and the rest of the athletic administration's back by interviewing for the Jets coaching vacancy after being told not to or he'd be canned.

At least someone out there wanted him.

What is up with Varitek?

This is definitely a joke.

So the deadline was suppose to be at 8:30 a.m. this morning and now it is 11:20 a.m. almost three hours later and still no word on whether if Tek is taking the deal or not.

If you haven't been following, the Red Sox offered the captain a one-year deal with a guaranteed $5 million or a one-year deal for $5 million with a vesting option.

Last season the catcher made $10 million (hard to believe with his performance with the exception of calling Lester's no-hitter).

Once we hear something we'll update this story.

Elizabeth Stieg moves from basketball player to coach

SPRINGFIELD - Elizabeth Stieg never sought to become a basketball coach. Playing the sport for most of her life, it has always been one of her passions, but she never figured that she would make the transition from the court to the sidelines.

"People always told me that I should pursue coaching, but I never really gave it any thought," Stieg said.

A little prodding from one of her own coaches helped shape her future, though, and today the Agawam native is in her second year as an assistant women's basketball coach at Western New England College under fourth-year head coach Nicole Chaszar and assistant coach Doug Pearson, who was head coach of the men's program from 1998-2004.

Ludlow drops to Chicopee Comp

It was a quiet night on the sports desk, but action was still admist.

In my second to last week helping out on the desk here are some notes that contributed to today's roundup.

Athol/Frontier, Mahar/Greenfield, Belchertown/McCann Tech, Quaboag/Shepard Hill, and Tantasqua/David Prouty.

All games are in the girl's basketball roundup written by The Republican's Russ Held.

How far we've come: A tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Day

1947 - Jackie Robinson's major league debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers
1962 - Robinson inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame
1963 - Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech.
2009 - Barack Obama the first African American President of the U.S.

These are a few snippets of how the United States has come a far way from segregation. I'm sure both Jackie and Martin are smiling down right now and will be in tears come tomorrow at noon.

I'm actually reading a book right now (wow, me, reading a book?) on Jackie Robinson called, "Blackout, The Untold Story of Jackie Robinson's First Spring Training." It's pretty interesting as I'm about halfway through. I bought it two years ago and never had time to actually read it. Once I'm through I'll definitely post some interesting tidbits that people might have not been aware of either.

Hope you enjoy the above video I found on YouTube, which I thought was pretty cool.

Happy MLK Day folks.

Later this week: MLB salary cap wrapup (I said I'd do it today, but I figured I'd be more appropiate for another time.)

Youkilis to stay for a while

Yes, I know I am late with this, but this deserves a shutout. Just like Dustin Pedroia the reigning American League MVP, Kevin Youkilis is here to stay for a while. The first/third baseman signed a four-year contract with fifth year option on Friday January 16.

How huge is this for the Red Sox? Well it's practical and pure genius because why wouldn't you sign your two star players to contract extensions to make sure they don't leave town?

Click here to see video from the press conference.

You voted and I responded

On Batter-up with Bruno I put up a poll asking what sports topics of interest would you prefer to keep coming back to visit the blog.

Well an overwhelming response (four out of seven votes) of "high school and college sports" was received and I also did my research and discovered that the majority of people that found out about my original blog, found it by Googling something high school sports related and something finally clicked.

So I give you East versus West, a blog that will follow high school sports in the state of Massachusetts. Maybe some college happenings will pop up on here from time to time we shall see, but for now this will be the predominant site of all high school sports news.

I will still be blogging on Batter-up with Bruno where it'll mostly be baseball, college, media, and other random happenings. So I hope you will join me for my new blog beat, which I should started years ago and just discovered, awesome.

Please take a moment to go and check it out and vote in my poll. It's all about you readers so the more response the merrier.

As always, keeping you posted folks.

Happy four year anniversary!!!

Not actually sure if this is the correct date, but I'm close enough.

Today marks four full years since launching 'Batter-up with Bruno' back on AOL Hometown Journals in 2005. Since then, this blog has been revamped, formatted, content switched, and moved to Google's blogger.

To all of you who continue to visit, thank you!

I once again, might be up to more big changes in the blog world and will keep you posted as soon as it happens.

Playing catch up...Baldelli No. 5 thoughts.

Ok, I found a temporary solution to my computer problem so here's the latest lowdown of what I would have posted days ago...

Rocco Baldelli wearing No. 5

I saw the picture first, then read all about it that Baldelli chose to keep his number and wear it where it hasn't been worn by a Red Sox player for about four years. There's a lot of emotion with No. 5. It became my automatic favorite number in 1997. No. 5 was my idol, all-time favorite player, and I was crushed when Theo decided to trade him away in July of 2004, but as all Red Sox fans know, we had to say goodbye to Nomar Garciaparra because clearly he wasn't the same Nomar as in years past.

Thoughts on Baldelli wearing No. 5? I hope it's not a curse, no seriously just because you know all of his recent injuries and all. I'm really hoping for the best with him. Sox fans always loved the idea of having Baldelli in Boston...a healthy one at least.

I still have my No. 5 hanging up in my closet, but with 'Garciaparra' on the back of it. I'm not sure if I'll wear it anytime soon again, but I do still have all of my Nomar posters hanging on my walls of my room...I just never took them down, him and Pedro too.

Western Mass. high school hoop and hockey

Here's the latest scoop from the world of high school hoops last night.

On the girl's end Agawam beat Hampshire, 42-37. Morgan Lockwood was flying high all night,as she grabbed 21 of the Brownies 43 rebounds on offense.

Monson trounced Southwick 53-22 led by Meghan Boyle with a career high 20 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.

Other games notes I had were Hopkins/Easthampton, Pioneer/Greenfield, and Putnam/Pathfinder.

High school hockey

This is a must read. Cathedral boy's ice hockey beat B.C. High last night 1-0 at the Olympia as the Panthers dedicated the game to Elms College baseball player Christopher Burnham who died on Friday. It's one of those touching stories and tributes that even non-sports fans can appreciate. Kudos to Fran Sypek.

Top high school contributor: Hoop highlights

In the last 30 days, it appears I am at the top of the leaderboard as the number one high school contributor on Yard Barker with 26 points, which is 13 higher from the next blogger.

Unfortunately, I am still having some computer issues, but I encourage you to check back often to see if I have resolved the problem.

Some quick high school hoops notes:

On Friday night, one of my game notes appeared to have gotten the lead as Ludlow beat previously undefeated Minnechaug, 65-60 at Wilbraham.

Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir who is chasing Rebecca Lobo's high school state scoring record struck for 45 points against Belchertown, however the Orioles lost 61-53.

Abdul-Qaadir is 140 points shy of tying Lobo's mark.

Other notes of mine from girl's hoops that made the cut: Northampton/Amherst, South Hadley/Pioneer Valley Christian, and Mohawk/Smith Academy.

At the guy's end: Sci-Tech/Chicopee Comp, Turners Falls/Mahar, and Frontier/Hampshire.

Busted computer

Hi folks,

I just wanted to let everyone know that my worthy and fast laptop is currently busted and that's why I haven't been posting for the past couple of days. I'm praying for a miracle that it'll come back to life.

For now, please vote in the above poll until I try to fix this mess and as soon as I find a solution I will post all updates about the MLB salary cap discussion, my thoughts about Rocco Baldelli wearing No. 5 on the Sox, high school and college news, and other news that may come up.

Thanks!

Free agent market will drop with cap

This is the last part of my speech written back in 2004. If you haven't been following it, I suggest you browse on my blog to find parts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

For a quicker way go here for parts 1-4.

So far the most commented on Yardbarker is part 5: Do ballplayers really need millions?

D. Free Agent Market will slowly drop down

1. WORSE POSSIBLE IDEA TO HIT MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

a. in 1973 Curt Flood came up with the idea of free agency

b. players like Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio, Satchel Paige, and Jackie Robinson weren’t given that option. Unless they were so unhappy with the ball club, they could be traded, but basically stayed with their team throughout their entire careers.

i. Very rare nowadays will a player stay with one team his entire major league career. Maybe Derek Jeter will brake the barrier.

2. Baseball has turned into a business, not a sport

a. it’s now a market, only about making as much money as you possible can.

i. George Steinbrenner has done a good job with that.

b. look at ticket prices just to go to a game, food, souvenirs, etc. a family of four can’t afford to go and enjoy a game without it costing them at least $200 if not more.

III. Conclusion

A. This is exactly why Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap

1. It’s not fair for the other teams

a. Tampa Bay and Milwaukee

  2. Too much money

a. A-Rod, Manny Ramirez, Barry Bonds

3. No more work stoppages

a. 1994, threat in 2002

4. Free agency costs will die down

a. no more $22 million contracts

B. Hopefully now you see where I’m coming from. I thought I made some good points, whether you agree or disagree that’s completely up to you. But hopefully I proved a point. Whether the MLB will ever do a cap, well, in reality it might neevr happen. I hope you all have a great day. Thanks.

Tomorrow's preview: Five years later...from 2004 to 2009, why a salary cap may never be possible in the MLB.

Do ballplayers really need millions?

MLB salary cap speech continued...

6. Do they really need all this money?

a. Not only do they get paid by their team, but also with endorsements for TV ads, autographs, or basically anything that associates them.

7. Argument, do they kind of deserve this money?

a. yes, in some ways

i. it’s not individualized, you need every piece; hitting, pitching and defense. Not one player makes you win a championship.

ii. unlike basketball, where Paul Pierce, of the Boston Celtics, can score 50 points to win the game. In some cases, even that won’t make your team win.

8. But they whine and complain

a. believe it or not, players still continue to whine and complain about their contracts! Boo hoo hoo, I’m only making $20 million instead of $22 million.

C. Work Stoppage/Strike

1. Baseball’s greatest known work stoppage was in 1994, when the Montreal Expos could have won the World Series.

a. players like Pedro Martinez, Cliff Floyd, Larry Walker, and Moises Alou, to name a few were on that team.

2. This caused many fans to say, bye-bye, because it was ridiculous to cancel the rest of the ‘94 season and the World Series.

3. Players threatening another strike in 2002.

a. I remember that day, glued in front of my TV in the living room, praying and hoping that 1994 would not be repeated.

b. if it happened who knows how many fans would just say, forget this, this is ridiculous.

4. Salary Cap will prevent this in the future

a. because of a cap, every team will have to follow the same rules, unless the players want to strike and never play baseball again. Hopefully future problems of work stoppage will not occur.

Fire near Fenway detroys six restaurants

  • Thornton's Fenway Grill
  • Sorento's Italian Gourmet
  • Umi Japanese Restaurant
  • Greek Isles
  • Rod-Dee Thai Cuisine II
  • El Pelon Taqueria

  • These are the restaurants according to the Boston Herald that have been destroyed by this blaze.
As soon as I heard about this I was praying it wasn't, "Game On" and the "Cask n'Flagon," but this is still horrific news for all of those businesses and also for those people who live nearby.

Just in case you missed it and still wanted to check it out. For now we delete the complete blogs off our website. In order to scroll down you'll have to move the bottom scroll all of the way over to the right, then you'll barely see the right side scroll bar to move up and down.

Ballplayers make way too much $$$

    B. Ball players make way too much money

    1. In our lifetime most of us will not come to close to making as much as Alex Rodriguez does in a season.

    2. Even our professor, which I’m sure she makes good money teaching us, won’t even make as much money as A-Rod in her lifetime.

    3. Just think about it, for every hit A-Rod gets he earns $127,906

    a. home run; $611,111

    b. RBI; $207,547

    4. Pedro Martinez

    a. pitch he throws; $5,012

    b. strikeouts; $77,092

    c. wins; $1,093,750

Note: This is estimated data performed by simple ways of math

    5. It’s disgusting. But think about it. Is it really A-Rod’s fault for making so much?

    a. The Texas Rangers offered him the $22 million per season.

He’d be a fool not to take it compared to what he was making with his former club, the Seattle Mariners, which was 7 million per season.

Tomorrow's preview: Do ballplayers really need all of this money?

Baseball has turned into a business

    MLB salary cap speech continued.

Read below posts to find out what you've missed.

    3. Baseball has turned into a business rather than just a sport.

    a. farm system is a joke now

         i. Teams just buy players instead of growing them, instead of having the rookies gain experience, they either trade them away and they stay in AAA and until a superstar retires, they finally get a shot at the big league level.

    b. in order to have a successful ball club, owners are forced to invest, which can take years to do, Tampa Bay is almost getting there in a few more seasons by acquiring veteran players like Tino Martinez for a very young team.

        i. George Steinbrenner worth millions towards the New York Yankees invests in the team.

              a) since he lost yet again this year, Georgy will be looking to buy the best out there on the free agent market.

    High school hoop roundups

Check out today's girl's and boy's basketball roundups in The Republican.

I had more notes on the guy's end with the Turners Falls/Athol, Dean Tech/Renaissance, and Hoosac Valley/Amherst games.

    For girl's I got highlights from Hoosac Valley/Holyoke Catholic, Frontier/Hopkins, and McCann Tech/St. Mary's.

    MLB salary cap part 2

Note: This speech was written in 2004 so certain facts and numbers may not be accurate.

See below post to read the introduction just in case you missed it.

    II. Body

    A. Not fair to the other clubs.

    1. All 30 teams aren’t wealthy.

        a. can’t buy anyone they want like other teams.

            ii.  Boston Red Sox ($127,298,500).

            iii. Anaheim Angels ($100,534,667).

    2. The same teams keep making the playoffs.

       a. don’t expect the Tampa Bay Devil Rays ($29,556,667) or Milwaukee Brewers ($27,528,500) to win any time soon (side note: well I was still right).

       b. since 2001 practically the same teams are in the post-season

             i.  AL.

                   a)  New York Yankees (‘01 ‘02 ‘03 ‘04).

                   b)  Oakland Athletics (‘01 ‘02 ‘03).

                   c)  Minnesota Twins (‘02 ‘03 ‘04).

                   c) Arizona Diamondbacks (‘01 ‘02).

                   d) Houston Astros (‘01 ‘04).

                   e) San Francisco Giants (‘02 ‘03).

                   f) Chicago Cubs (‘03).

                   g) Florida Marlins (‘03).

                   h) Los Angeles Dodgers (‘04).

    c. out of top 12 teams in payroll, 8 of them qualified for the 2004 playoffs with an exception of the Minnesota Twins.

Why Major League Baseball needs a salary cap

I wanted to share some exerts from a speech I wrote and presented four years ago during my freshman year in college.

Everyday here until it's all done, I'll post the important snippets.

In my Introduction to Communications class at Holyoke Community College (before I transferred to Curry) we had to write an 8 -10 minute persuasive speech about the topic of our choice and I chose the topic of, "Why Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap."

Keep in mind this was written in 2004 so certain numbers will not be accurate.

    ..........................................................................................................
    By Amanda Bruno
    11/19/04

Topic: Why Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap.

Specific Goal: To persuade my audience that Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap.

Thesis: Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap because; it’s not fair to the other clubs, the players make way too much money, future problems of a work stoppage will not occur, and free agency is getting out of control.

    I. Introduction

(I skipped 'A' because it was just me blabbing to the class)

    B. Why I’m here today to talk to you young people about is why Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap. These are some of my arguments for it.

                   1. It’s not fair to the other clubs.

                   2. The players make way too much money.

                   3. Future problems of a work stoppage will not occur.

                   4. Free Agency is getting out of control.

    C. I know I’m kind of sounding like a hypocrite saying Major League Baseball needs a Salary Cap with me being a Red Sox fan, but lets face it, Major League Baseball is becoming boring with always the same teams making the playoffs year after year.

    ..........................................................................................................

Tomorrow's preview: II. Body A. Not fair to the other clubs.
